2D CAD drawings are digital drawings that are similar to the type of CAD drafting that was originally done on paper, by a draftsman sitting at a drafting table.  Digital 2D CAD incorporates the same drafting processes into computer programs and the design is drawn on the computer monitor rather than on a piece of paper.   In 2D CAD, as with paper drawings, all of the information is presented in a flat format. There is no depth, and no way to view the drawing from different angles.  A 2D CAD drawing of a building or a product requires the viewer to visualize what it will actually look like once it is built or manufactured. This means that the understanding of the product or building is limited to each viewer’s ability to visualize the finished construction.  Not many people are good at this type of visualization, which makes it difficult to collaborate and revise the design.

 In today’s design world, 3D models are the preferred option for easy visualization.  So, what do you do with all of your legacy 2D CAD drawings when you move to a 3D design system, such as Revit, Solid Works, Catia, or another 3D program? 

The process of converting a 2D drawing into a 3D model can seem complicated, even when using some of the popular 3D modeling tools like AutoCAD, SolidEdge and Microstation.  Two of the most important parts of the conversion process are (1) understanding the process itself; and, being well-schooled in the software that you’re using.  Remember that the aim of this technology is to simplify the process of creating 3D part models from existing 2D CAD drawings.

The process of converting a 2D drawing into a 3D model is quite complicated and the method of conversion can be time consuming.   While some popular 3D modeling tools like AutoCAD, SolidEdge and Microstation can help simplify the process,  it still takes a CAD expert to easily generate both the 2D drafting view and the 3D CAD model that are usually needed for every day project activity – whether the user is a steel fabricator, machine operator or an architect.   The 2D drafting view enables the person who does the actual work to build the model or component, while the 3D model enables the designer, key investors and others to visualize the finished product.
